I don’t mean bringing a curly wand. I mean rocking and traveling with natural curly hair. I have very curly fine hair that can both frizz and/or be very flat. It changes depending on the type of water I am using, climate, humidity, and sometimes (I think) out of revenge. The best advice I ever received about my hair was that sometimes you just need to embrace the frizz. This is the approach I take while traveling. Somedays my hair will be full and glamorous and other days it will look like a wet mop. And that’s OK! It’s why we have bobby pins! With that said, we curly-haired mamas can still put up a fight! I have put together 7 essential tips for curly hair while traveling. This is what I do to manage my curly hair. So keep scrolling for 7 essential tips for curly hair while traveling.

Tip 1: Invest in the best product for your hair
I only use four products on wash days. I use Innersense which is expensive but has worked great for my fine curly (and colored) hair. I can usually go 3 to 4 days without having to wash my hair.
PRO TIP: I like to buy the travel size versions of my curly hair products. I found they last longer and don’t leak as much. if that doesn’t work for you, here are the travel sized bottles I have used in the past that were decent. Travel Friendly Bottles.
Shampoo: Innersense Organic: Natural Color Awakening Hairbath Shampoo
Conditioner: Innersense Organic Beauty-Natural Color Radiance Daily Conditioner
Gel: Innersense Organic Beauty-Natural I Create Hold Styling Gel
Volume: Innersense Organic Beauty_ Natural I Create Volume Hair Volumizing Lotion
Tip 2: Consider a leave in conditioner
This tip is for when you will be gone longer than a week. On a recent lengthy road trip, I noticed my hair felt dry and damaged. It needed some lovin’. So I grabbed some leave-in conditioner to give it a little extra hydration. Here are two of my favorites. They have worked great for me as a quick fixer upper while I travel.

Tip 3: Bring an old t-shirt or microfiber towel.
Hotel towels are brutal on curly hair. An old t-shirt or microfiber towel is ideal both for protecting your curls and preventing frizz. Best yet, it doesn’t take up much room in your luggage.
Tip 4:Bring backup gear
Somedays I just look in the mirror and wonder what happened to my hair. Thank goodness for bobby pins, jaw clips, and scrunchies. Never leave home without them! I also like to bring some headbands and scarves for the days it’s really bad or I can’t be bothered to wash my hair. I am a big fan of these headbands. Great for those lazy days!
Tip 5: Bring a wide tooth comb
Most curly friends know this but a wide tooth comb makes detangling your hair easier, doesn’t cause fizziness or damage your curls. I find it essential to use it while wet to comb my conditioner through.
Tip 6: Hot take: Don’t bring a silk pillowcase and a blow dryer.
I am a very light packer and find hauling a blow dryer to be incredibly annoying and unnecessary. I can’t think of one place in all of my travels that didn’t have a blow dryer. Just use what is provided and save yourself the hassle. As for the silk pillowcase, you do you but for travel I just don’t think it is necessary. Just throw your hair into a pineapple and call it a night.
Tip 7: BEST PRODUCT-A collapsible hair diffuser
Collapsible/Portable Hair Diffuser: The holy grail hair of curly hair travel products. This is the best product I have ever bought for travel. This is a small diffuser that has fit on every blow dryer I have used while traveling. It barely takes up any space in my bag. It has worked perfectly and I am in full-on love with it. Don’t hesitate to buy this!
