As a Booking.com and Tripadvisor affiliate, I may earn a small commission on some links—at no extra cost to you. I only recommend places I’ve personally experienced, so you know it’s all genuine, not just internet research.

A few notes…

This Slovenia road trip itinerary is designed for summer/early Fall travel and doesn’t include winter activities like skiing. It’s built with the average traveler in mind, combining major highlights with a few hidden gems along the way. You won’t find any intense alpine hiking here—we weren’t in shape for that during our visits—but there’s still plenty of scenic beauty to enjoy. While many of the places and activities are kid-friendly, this itinerary is geared more toward adult travelers. It starts in Ljubljana and ends in Goriška Brda, but feel free to adapt it however it works best for you!

How to get to Slovenia?

How you get to Slovenia will shape how you plan your road trip. I came from Treviso, Italy (which I loved and highly recommend!) and rented a car from the Venice Airport. From there, it’s an easy 2.5-hour drive to Ljubljana. (I was flying in and out of Venice for this trip hence why I started there.)

You can also fly directly into Ljubljana, though if you’re coming from the U.S., you’ll need a layover. The airport is small and easy to navigate but has limited flight options, so plan ahead. If you’re starting your trip at Lake Bled, flying into Salzburg is another good option—it’s about a three-hour drive away. It really just depends on where you’re coming from.

Piran is just amazing.

How to get around Slovenia?

The best way to get around Slovenia is by car—it gives you so much more flexibility with timing and allows for those fun, unplanned adventures along the way. The roads are easy to navigate, and Google Maps worked perfectly for us. Slovenia has an efficient bus system that makes it easy to get around, but I still think having a car is the best option. As for trains, I can’t say much—I didn’t see a single one running during my two weeks in the country.

We rented a car through Galdieri Rent (not affiliated), and it was surprisingly affordable. Just make sure to let them know you’ll be crossing from Italy into Slovenia. You’ll also need an e-vignette to drive on Slovenian highways—buy it online before you go to avoid a hefty fine. Here is the link: Slovenian Vignette.

Important Travel Information

  • Credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere but make sure to have Euros handy. Small business may not always accepted credit cards.
  • Look into a travel sim card if you cell phone carrier is expensive to use overseas. You will need the GPS while traveling around. We have used Mobimatter in the past and was happy with their service.
  • Slovenia is not a cheap destination. The pricing is similar to Italy and Austria.
  • Alpine hiking is not for beginners. Do your research before setting out on a hike. Check out Moon & Honey for hiking guides. I love their blog.
  • Nearly everyone speaks English but learn a few phrases.
  • Wine tastings can be expensive. I preferred going to a wine bar instead of a winery.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Their water is amazing, and they are quite proud of it.
  • Clean up after yourself. Slovenia is a very green country.

Day Four-Seven: Lake Bled

Lake Bled is undeniably beautiful—and it’s easy to see why it’s one of Slovenia’s most famous spots. The walk around the lake is gorgeous, and the little island with its church (Church of the Assumption of Mary) feels almost magical. But Bled itself is quite touristy, and while I’m glad I visited, it’s not a place I need to return. Social media has definitely hyped it up, and the crowds show it.

Lake Bohinj, on the other hand, completely won me over. It’s just as stunning, surrounded by mountains and far less touristy. If you want that peaceful, natural beauty without the crowds, head there instead.
