Best Nature & Outdoor Day Trips from Ljubljana
Škocjan Caves
📍 50 minutes | 🚗 Car recommended. Limited public transport options.
Let me tell you something. You are not going to see many travel bloggers recommend Škocjan Caves. And I will tell you exactly why — you cannot take photos inside. So instead they send you to a different cave system where they can film content and rack up the views. I see you, bloggers. I digress.
Škocjan Caves is a UNESCO protected area and one of the top ten travel experiences of my entire life. Yes there are stunning stalactites and stalagmites throughout — but that is almost secondary to the main event. You walk through a massive, jaw dropping underground river gorge that is so vast and so otherworldly it genuinely stops you in your tracks. Think Mine of Moria vibes.
You will have a timed ticket and a guide who leads you through the whole experience. Walking is required so wear comfortable shoes.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: Book well in advance — tickets sell out fast and you cannot just show up. And bring a warmer layer — it is significantly cooler inside the caves than outside regardless of the season.
Lake Bled
📍 40 minutes | 🚗 We drove but buses run frequently from Ljubljana bus station and are very easy. A rare one you can do without a car.
I am not going to pretend I am being original here. Every travel blogger, every guide book and yes, even the great Rick Steves will tell you to visit Lake Bled. And they are all completely right. (Lake Bled Guide Coming Soon)
The lake is stunning — a small church on a tiny island, a castle perched on the cliffs above and water so impossibly blue it almost looks fake. Walk the entire lake rather than visiting the island if time is tight. The walk gives you endlessly changing views and takes around two hours. You will not regret it.
Afterwards grab sweet treats at Hitri Kruhek or an outstanding mushroom soup at The Oldest Bled Cellar — a wonderfully cozy spot.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: Get there early. It gets very busy and the walk is a completely different experience before the crowds arrive.

These day trips are a great addition to a Slovenian road trip. Check out our 2 week Slovenia road trip guide!
Lake Bohinj
📍 1 hour | 🚗 We drove but buses from Ljubljana are available. Easy to combine with Bled in a single day.
Lake Bled gets all the attention. But if I am being honest — and I always am — Lake Bohinj is the real highlight for me.
The mountains crashing down into this vast, stunning lake is one of my favorite memories from Slovenia. It is quieter and more rural in a way that Bled simply cannot match anymore. There are plenty of trails to explore around the lake and the Vogel cable car will take you up to a spectacular viewpoint over the whole area.
And do not leave without stopping at Divja Jaga — a great little snack bar serving genuinely excellent coffee. I mean it. Really solid coffee.
If you have time, combine Bohinj with Lake Bled in a single day. But if I had to pick just one? Bohinj. Every time.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: The cable car gets busy in peak season so go early or be prepared to wait.

Volčji Potok Arboretum
📍 30 minutes | 🚗 Car recommended. Limited public transport.
If you need a day to just completely slow down and breathe, Volčji Potok Arboretum is your answer. This gorgeous arboretum features 3,500 plants from around the world across 85 hectares of lakes, streams and waterfalls. It is peaceful, beautiful and exactly the kind of place that reminds you why slow travel is the best travel.
And at just 11 euros for adults it is an absolute steal.
Just down the road is Kordun Grill Restaurant — an excellent spot for lunch serving outstanding Balkan food. The sausages and bread are fantastic and the owner was so genuinely kind. Highly recommend making it part of the day.
If you want to expand the trip further, the town of Kamnik is close by and worth adding. I will be honest — we didn’t get a chance to explore it ourselves but have heard wonderful things and it is very high on the list for next time!
Pragmatic Pro Tip: Pair the arboretum with Kamnik and Kordun for a full and wonderful day out of the city.

Logar Valley
📍 1 hour 30 minutes | 🚗 Car essential. No practical public transport options.
I will be upfront with you — Logar Valley deserves more than a day trip. It is one of the most beautiful mountain valleys I have ever visited in my life and I would genuinely recommend spending a few nights there. But if you must do it as a day trip, you absolutely must. Just go. (Full Logar Valley guide coming soon.)
You will need cash for the small entrance fee to drive into the park. After that prepare to be completely wowed. The stunning Kamnik-Savinja Alps form a breathtaking backdrop to a small winding road lined with cows, wildflowers and tiny hotels. I have never been anywhere so quiet. It is genuinely otherworldly.
Walk the Pot po Logarski dolini — a 7 kilometre natural and ethnographic trail through the entire valley. It is not a short walk but follow it all the way to the end and you will be rewarded with the Rinka Waterfall, a stunning 90 metre cascade that stops you completely in your tracks. And perched right next to it is Orlovo Gnezdo — a wonderful little bar where you can sit with a coffee or a drink and stare at the waterfall. One of those perfect moments. You can also drive most of the way to the waterfall and do just the short hike at the end if you prefer.
For lunch Dom Planincev is a wonderful hearty local option — they simply put out a short list of what they are cooking that day using local ingredients and that is it. No fuss, all delicious. Eco House Na Razpotju is another brilliant choice — a cozy outdoor patio serving fantastic food, excellent coffee and gin cocktails made from their own homemade gin. They also make their own tea and we brought multiple bags home. Highly recommend.
And before you leave make sure to stop for a coffee or a drink on the patio at Hotel Plesnik. The sweeping views of the valley from there are just outstanding.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: You will need a car for this one — public transport to the valley is very limited. And bring cash for the entrance fee.

Best Castle Day Trip from Ljubljana
Predjama Castle
📍 1 hour | 🚗 Car recommended. Complicated to reach without one.
A castle. Built into a cave. In the middle of a cliff face. I mean come on. Predjama Castle is an absolute must see in Slovenia and one of those places that makes you stop and wonder how on earth someone looked at a cave in a cliff and thought — yes, that is where I will build my home.
There are plenty of little cafes nearby to grab a bite before or after your visit. I will be honest — I didn’t make it inside on my visit but loved every second of seeing it from the outside. It is one of those places that is spectacular just to stand in front of.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: Go early or late in the day — tour buses come through heavily in the middle of the day and it gets very busy. And bring comfortable shoes as the parking area is a bit of a walk from the castle itself.

Best Medieval Towns for a Day Trip from Ljubljana
Radovljica
📍 1 hour | 🚗 We drove but buses from Ljubljana are available. Easy to combine with Bled in a single day.
Radovljica is a genuine hidden gem and one of those places most visitors to the area drive straight past without realising what they are missing. A beautiful medieval town with a moat, known for its honey and chocolate — two things Slovenia does exceptionally well — and an absolute pleasure to wander around.
It is small but charming and very much worth an hour or two of your time. Kunstelj 1873 is a great spot for lunch and the patio views are outstanding.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: This is very easily combined with a day trip to Lake Bled given how close they are. Do the lake in the morning and Radovljica for lunch — a perfect pairing.
Škofja Loka
📍 30 minutes | 🚗 We drove but buses run every 30 minutes from Ljubljana. One of the easiest without a car.
Škofja Loka was my favorite small town I visited in Slovenia. Full stop. The Old Town is just beautiful — one of those perfectly preserved medieval towns that makes you slow down completely and just soak it all in.
Wander along the river, explore the bridges and just get happily lost in the streets. Then make the walk up to the castle. It is worth every step because just outside the castle sits Grajska Kavarna — a cafe with truly stunning views over the town and outstanding coffee. And I mean outstanding. This is not a throwaway coffee stop. This is a destination coffee stop.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: Do not skip the walk up to the castle. The cafe at the top alone makes it completely worth it.

Best Coastal Day Trip from Ljubljana
Piran
📍 1 hour 20 minutes | 🚗 We drove but direct buses run daily from Ljubljana. Doable without a car.
Full transparency — Piran deserves more than a day trip and I would genuinely recommend spending a few nights there if you can. (Full Piran guide coming soon!) But as a day trip it is still absolutely worth the drive.
Piran is a stunning small coastal city with beautiful Venetian architecture — the kind of place where getting completely lost in the streets is not just acceptable but actively encouraged. Walk the city walls for incredible views of the coastline and just wander. The coastal walks are gorgeous and the whole place has a wonderfully unhurried energy.
For coffee head to Caffe Neptun. For lunch Fritolin Pri Cantini is excellent — and yes I know I am not being original with that suggestion but there is a reason everyone recommends it. And if you are there for dinner — or honestly any meal at all — Ladja Podlanica is one of the best meals I had in the whole of Slovenia. Just go. Any time of day. You will thank me.
Pragmatic Pro Tip: You cannot drive into Piran — park in one of the garages outside the city and walk in. It gets extremely busy in summer so go early or consider visiting in September like I did. It was practically a ghost town. Absolutely perfect.

Pragmatic Verdict: Day Trips from Ljubljana
Ljubljana is one of the best bases for day trips in all of Europe and this list proves it. Underground river gorges, stunning alpine valleys, medieval towns and a castle built into a cliff — all within two hours.
My honest picks if you are short on time — Škocjan Caves is non negotiable, Logar Valley is unmissable and pick Lake Bohinj over Lake Bled if you have to choose. Rent a car and get exploring. You will not regret a single kilometre.
