Best Things to do in Winchester, England
1. Winchester Cathedral
This is something to see. Winchester Cathedral is the longest medieval cathedral in the world. The stained glass, vaults, monuments, etc. are all incredibly beautiful. I highly recommend joining one of the free daily tours. It was incredibly informative. Most importantly, this is where Jane Austen is buried. (Yes, I did freak out!)Paid attraction. Do not miss this.
2. The Great Hall
The Great Hall is from the 13th century. It includes great information and beautiful stained glass windows. Most interestingly, it contains an important artifact from medieval mythology: King Author’s Round Table!! This was very fascinating and so worth the trip. Has some activities for kids. Small fee required. This is a must visit.
3. Underground Sally Port
This is just in front of the Great Hall. These are secret passageways that were used to protect Winchester Castle and surprise the enemy or to get back to the castle, safely. This is a free and outdoors attraction. Kids will enjoy exploring the small passageways.
4. Get lost in England’s oldest main street
A (mostly) pedestrian only zone that houses major box stores and small boutique shops. It is a lovely walk that even features Elizabethan and Regency architecture. Make sure you visit this lovely walk.
5. Check out the Winchester Buttercross
6. Winchester City Museum
Learn all about this historic city from being an ancient capital to Jane Austen’s burial site. A must visit and it’s in the heart of the city!
Great Restaurant to visit in Winchester
Cote Brassiere: Yes, it is a chain BUT I do enjoy their food. It was comforting and yummy. I was only in for the day so this is the only place I experienced for food. I do recommend it though!
