Important Tips and Tricks with Dogs and Airbnbs

Read Everything.

Carefully read the house rules, description of the property, amenities and comments. I can’t tell you how many times I looked at “dog friendly” houses, where a dog had to be crated the whole time or couldn’t go on carpets or only allowed dogs under 25lbs. Do not book a house without carefully reading the whole listing.

Watch out for the fees.

When you search in Airbnb for dog friendly, Airbnb MIGHT charge you automatically for that pet. This means your service fee etc. might go up more then what the owner is charging for the pet fee. This happened to us where the owner was charging us $50 but Airbnb had charged us $60. Take a minute to do the math. See how much it is with a pet vs without one. (This just requires you to click pet and then do it again without clicking pet.) If it is more reach out to the owner before you book.

Communicate

Speaking of owners, email them about pet fees and rules. I have had surprise pet rules come up upon arrival. (Ex. Showed up to an Airbnb where it said to crate the dog and this wasn’t listed anywhere.) I like to have everything in writing just in case things go south.

Other things to look for…

  • Bring some extra sheets to put over furniture and beds just in case.
  • Make sure the fenced in area, is actually fenced in or not shared with another property. I want to let my dog run around freely without having to navigate other dogs and people.
  • Clean up after your dog. Don’t be that person who ruins it for everyone else.

A nice dog walk in Saint Augustine near our dog friendly Airbnb.
Enjoying a nice walk in Saint Augustine.

Florida

  1. Cozy Suite, 15 minutes to beach, Saint Augustine: This is a guest suite attached to the owner’s house. The owner is incredibly thoughtful and provided a very clean suite. The suite was massive as well as the bathroom. There was also a washer and dryer! There are some excellent walks nearby.
    • Dog Rules: No pet fee but dog needs to be crated while out. She let us borrow hers.
  2. Private Cottage in West Palm Beach, West Palm Beach: This was one of my favorite Airbnbs. It was super cozy, had a full kitchen and good size private backyard that my dog loved. Highly recommend. It is small and only fits 2 people/1 dog.
    • Dog Rules: $50.00 pet fee, clean up after dog.
  3. Recently award winning, renovated, Davenport: This is incredibly close to Orlando and is only 15 minutes to Disney World. It was clean and comfortable with plenty of areas to walk the dog. Only downside was the traffic in the area.
    • Dog Rules: $60.00 pet fee, clean up after dog, not allowed on furniture.
  4. 3BR Beach House, Marco Island: This house had a great outdoor area with bug screens so the dog can go in and out. Lots of great walking in the area and really great park. This wasn’t the best Airbnb a bit shoddy but not bad for the price.
    • Dog Rules: $25 per day per pet.

Kentucky

  1. Charming Guesthouse on 10 acre Horse Farm, Harrodsburg: This was a cozy Airbnb that had friendly horses and gorgeous views. The guesthouse has a private fenced in backyard. It does require a car to get places. (Check out the picture above.)

New Hampshire

  1. Timber Home, North Conway: I loved this Airbnb. It is beautifully decorated, walking distance to downtown North Conway, nestled in the White Mountains and so SO cozy.
    • Dog Rules: $50 fee per dog, must be crated when out of the house and not allowed on furniture.
  2. Mount Washington Place, Bretton Woods: Another Airbnb that I loved. Beautiful views on the balcony, great location for skiing/hiking, very cozy. HOWEVER this location has changed its dog rules since I have stayed.
    • Dog Rules: $100 pet fee and dogs who bark cannot be left unattended which in my opinion is insane. I, unfortunately, will not be staying here again because dogs bark. BUT if your dog is very quiet then it might be a good choice for you.

North Carolina

  1. Houz Zen, Arden: This was a great Airbnb that was only 15 minutes from Asheville. It has hundreds of glowing reviews because is sooo dog friendly. It is a cozy basement unit with kitchenette. They provide dog bags and a dog treat bar. Most importantly, it has a private fenced in yard. This was a huge hit with my dog who couldn’t stop sniffing. He loved it. Highly recommend.
    • Dog Rules: No pet fee, no pet rules except to clean up after them. Two dog max.
  2. Pet Friendly-Cozy & New, Murphy: This is right on the border of Georgia and is a perfect location for exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is a very cozy cabin and incredibly clean. It has great walks for the dog.
    • Dog Rules: No pet fee and dog must be on leash outside.
