I really like the Nimble Champ Portable Charger. It is super compact, easily fits in my travel gear, comes in pretty colors and charges my phone quickly. Full disclosure that is all I know about it. I am not great with technology so my husband (who understands tech) wrote this review to help you make your own decision on the Nimble Champ Portable Charger.

The Nimble Champ Portable Charger

After destroying my wife’s old portable USB charger pack by dropping it in the dog water bowl, it was time to go down the research rabbit hole and find a replacement.

What we need out of a Portable Charger

There were really only 3 important features I needed.  It had to be:

  1. Lightweight and portable
  2. Have the latest tech
  3. Be reasonably priced

This battery pack was intended to top up my and my wife’s phones when walking around a city for the day, so being able to easily stick it in a pocket and get maybe 2 phone charges out of it was the goal.  A massive 20,000 mah battery designed to charge large laptops multiple times was not what we were looking for.

Our old charger was a 5000 mah battery.  While very portable and had about enough capacity for us, it had only the most basic 5v 2A technology – charging a phone took absolutely ages.  My wife couldn’t really care about the technology inside the battery, but it was important to me to get something with more modern tech to speed things up: some combination of Quick Charge, Power Delivery (PD) and maybe Programmable Power Supply (PPS).  All the new tech is generally based on the USB C port, but having a USB A port would also be nice to charge my older devices and make use of the A cables I’ve got lying around.

Research on Portable Chargers

As I dove down the rabbit hole, I quickly learnt that USB charging is a confusing nightmare of terms and compatibility issues!  E.g. USB A ports support up to Quick Charge 3.0 standards and generally don’t support PD & PPS (which require USB C ports), but manufacturers can basically customize anything they want and develop proprietary standards so that you’re never quite sure what you’re getting.  Then you have to make sure that the cables are compatible (pins have to be wired correctly), and obviously the device too (in our case Samsung Galaxy S21s).  My goal became getting as much tech as I could into the battery pack, so that as many charging scenarios as possible were covered.

Hello, Nimble CHAMP Portable Charger

That lead me to the Nimble Champ USB.

At first, I thought a 10,000 mah battery would be much bigger than our old 5,000 and therefore violate our first requirement of portability.  However, when comparing the dimensions, they were basically identical give or take a few millimeters – its amazing how far technology has come in ~ 5 years.

The Tech

The tech offered in the Nimble Champ checked almost all the boxes too:

  • 1x USB C and 1x USB A ports
  • The USB C supports Power Delivery
  • The USB A supports Quick Charge
  • I thought this would mean I could charge both my and my wife’s Galaxy S21 at ‘fast charge’ speeds at the same time – unfortunately this was not the case.
  • If you plug a single Galaxy S21 into either the A or C port, you get fast charging.  But if you plug 2 devices, both ports slow down to regular slow charging.
  • Unfortunately, the USB C port does not support PPS, so there is no ‘super fast charging’ available.  This is not the end of the world, as in my experience on the S21, this only speeds charging up by about 6 mins vs regular ‘fast charging’ of an almost dead battery.

Price

Finally, the price.  We were able to get ours on sale for $29.99.  $35.98 all in including tax and shipping.

Final Thoughts

When looking at the alternatives, there really weren’t that many small, portable options available (there’s loads of choice when you start looking at large 20,000 mah chargers).  Im very happy with the choice, and even considered buying a second one for myself because I liked my wife’s one so much.  I decided against it for the time being given we only need one between the 2 of us, but if they come out with an updated model that includes PPS + the ability to charge 2 devices at the same time at higher speeds, I’d probably pull the trigger.

Bottom line, the Nimble CHAMP Portable Charger is the perfect portable travel charger for us and I’m very happy with it.
