Where to stay in Burgundy?
Since we traveled in November, I decided to stay in larger towns and cities to avoid seasonal closures. This made it much easier to access restaurants and attractions. We split our stay across three different locations to really maximize our time exploring Burgundy, since the region is quite large. We opted for Airbnbs, and honestly, they were fantastic! Highly recommend the ones we stayed at.
- Beaune: We stayed in an amazing vacation rental through Booking.com, right across from Hospices de Beaune. You can even see the nightly projections from the apartment! Everything was within walking distance, and there’s free parking nearby. The place was clean, cozy, and spacious—I highly recommend it!
- Dijon: This Airbnb is a small, cozy apartment in the heart of Dijon, located on a charming pedestrian-only street lined with medieval buildings. There’s a bakery right next door. Perfect for one or two people exploring the city—just note, there are several flights of narrow stairs and no elevator.
- Auxerre: This is one of my favorite Airbnbs! It’s beautiful, comfortable, and honestly, the cleanest place I’ve ever stayed—seriously, even the utensil drawer was spotless. There’s free parking right outside and an elevator to the fourth floor. I highly recommend this spot!

Should you visit in November?
Visiting Burgundy in November was an amazing experience, but it does come with some drawbacks. The lack of crowds and the chance to feel like a local completely won me over. However, the weather was a bit of a challenge—mostly gray skies and plenty of rain. The charm of the off-season might be perfect for you, but be prepared for dreary weather. Coffee in France
I’m just going to say it—I’m not a fan of coffee in France. Yes, I said France. Am I generalizing? Maybe. But after drinking a lot of coffee during my trip, I just couldn’t get into it. Most of it was a bit too bitter for my taste. That said, don’t skip the café culture. It’s such a big part of the experience, and you should go enjoy it. I just don’t have any strong coffee recommendations for you!

Beaune
Alain Hess Cheesemonger
We absolutely loved this fromagerie. The selection of local cheeses was fantastic, perfect for our cheese nights. The staff was super knowledgeable and gave excellent recommendations based on our preferences. Definitely a wonderful spot to visit!
Charcuterie Raillard
In the heart of Beaune, we found a fantastic charcuterie. We stocked up on a variety of meats, pâté en croûte, and cheeses for a cozy cheese night at our Airbnb. The staff was super helpful, guiding us to the best local products. A must-stop for food lovers!
Les Caves Madeleine
Les Caves Madeleine was hands down the best meal I had in Burgundy, and yes, I know that’s a bold claim for such a renowned region! This little wine bar just outside the center of Beaune is an absolute gem. The food is outstanding—high-quality, local, and bursting with flavor. The service? Top-notch. The wine list is fantastic, and the staff really know their stuff. Every recommendation they gave hit the mark perfectly, pairing seamlessly with our meals. It’s got that cozy, relaxed vibe that makes you want to stay all night. But heads up—this place is popular! Make sure you snag a reservation early, because it fills up fast.
L’Ecrit’Vin
We were in Beaune on a Sunday in November, and even with the lower season, finding a table for lunch was tough since everything was booked. We stumbled upon Ecrit’Vin, right in the main square, and it turned out to be a gem. The cozy vibe inside made it a perfect stop. The menu is all about French classics, and they do them superbly. Another stellar beef bourguignon, and their escargots for a starter were excellent as well. Plus, the prices are reasonable. Definitely a great choice when visiting Beaune!
Dijon
Jonathan Pautet Chocolate Shop
This chocolate shop was right by our Airbnb, and we couldn’t stop popping in for their hazelnut creations and hazelnut bonbons. (Notice a theme here?) Truly spectacular chocolate!
Le Pre aux Clercs
Le Pré Aux Clercs is right in the heart of Dijon, facing the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. Normally, I avoid restaurants in main squares since they can be tourist traps, but I decided to give this one a shot after seeing some glowing reviews. The view? Spectacular! The inside has a more modern vibe. Service was excellent, and the wine list didn’t disappoint either. I had a beef confit that was absolutely delicious, and the poached pear dessert? Amazing! Now, here’s the kicker—my husband didn’t love his sweetbreads. In fact, he just kind of choked them down. So, it can be hit or miss depending on what you order. That said, I’d still recommend it because my meal was fantastic.
Les Halles-Dijon Market
Les Halles in Dijon is, without a doubt, one of the finest markets in all of France. Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday mornings, it’s hands down one of the best things to do in Dijon. The building itself is stunning, but the real magic is inside. The sheer variety of vendors is amazing—you can find everything from cheese and bread to produce and snails. We kept going back for lunch and dinner because the food was that good. Honestly, it’s the best spot to eat in Burgundy, in my opinion. If you don’t visit this market, you’re missing out on some of the best local Burgundy goods. You absolutely have to spend a morning wandering the aisles and tasting your way through it all.
Monsieur Moutarde
Mr. Mustard is an absolute gem for cocktails! We loved it so much we went twice to escape the rain and cozy up in front of the fireplace. The cocktails are super creative, with something for everyone. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend making a stop at Mr. Mustard!
Nuits-Saint-Georges
Louis Bouillot
This isn’t exactly a place to eat, but if you’re looking for the best Crémant de Bourgogne (aka champagne that’s not from the Champagne region—so, cheaper. WIN), this winery is a must! It’s my favorite for bubbles, and it’s just amazing. You get a bit of history about the place, followed by a hefty tasting in a beautiful sunroom. Highly recommend it! Everyone raves about the reds in Burgundy, but honestly, the whites and bubbles are where it’s at.
Café de Paris
We stumbled upon this gem after a tasting at Louis Bouillet, and wow, what a find! This restaurant serves the most incredible beef bourguignon—seriously, I can’t recommend it enough. Just go and get that dish. Lord, I’d give half my soul to eat it again!
Auxerre
Boulangerie Eric Roy
This was such a great find in Auxerre! They have excellent baguettes, pastries, and sandwiches. It’s a cute little spot, perfect for picking up bread for those local cheese and meat nights.
Restaurant PoivretSel
Restaurant Poivretsel was such a fantastic find! It’s tough to get a reservation—even for a midweek lunch in November—but totally worth it. This is a locals’ spot with incredible food. Definitely go for the three courses. The snails were delicious, and the pork fillet was spot on. The menu does change so it might be different when you visit. The restaurant itself is so charming and wonderfully French, which, as an American, I can’t get enough of! Another winner in Burgundy!
Semur-en-Auxois
La rumeur
This is a nice spot to stop for lunch in beautiful Semur-en-Auxois. The burgers and French fries were really good, and the meal was filling and affordable. A great little stop!
Avallon
Les Macarons de Charlou
Another great spot for beef bourguignon. Ha, kidding. Just a great spot for macarons. The hazelnut ones were a stand out!
Chablis
Bistrot Des Grands Crus
We stumbled upon this restaurant-hotel while exploring Chablis, and I was totally surprised by it. The food and service were top-notch. I loved the confit duck legs and the chestnut dessert. (The menu does change with the season.) It’s definitely a high-end spot with prices to match.
Flavigny-sur-Ozerian
Salon de the by Algranate
This teahouse was the perfect stop after exploring the beautiful Flavigny. It was cozy and had a wonderful range of teas—a great spot to warm up!
